Reason for Our Rating

Braintree helped usher in the wave of high-functioning payments platforms that boosted eCommerce stores everywhere to compete internationally and traditional retail. These efforts were since validated by a PayPal acquisition. They offer a robust feature set and can handle almost every currency and subscription requests.

But they have had a rockier path in recent. While definitely a proven payment platform, be weary of financial struggles and administrative pursuits that could consume precious working hours.

The Good

Fixed Prices There are mostly no surcharges and fees after the base charges. For high-grossing eCommerce teams, there is also the option to negotiate custom rates.

Developer-Friendly With their documentation and customization, technical team members have the ability to upgrade payment functionalities.

Playing in the Sandbox Braintree offers a nice Sandbox account for anyone looking to trial their services and get a full for the UI/UX before making a commitment.

The Bad

Held Funds and Fraud Insufficiency The two main complaints for Braintree are their strange account holds and lack of fraudulent policing.

Shopify Till You Dropify In 2016 Shopify ended their partnership with Braintree over financial disputes which eliminated an easy integration for teams.
